Walleye Are King
On Lake Erie
By Richard Martin, Ohio Outdoor Writer
Most Lake Erie fishermen know that walleyes will bite during all 12 months of the year, but is there a best month or two? Sure. It’s May and most of June. The fish have just come off their spawning runs and they’re hungry, feeding avidly to rebuild fat reserves, and willing to hit with more than usual abandon. Better yet, there are LOTS of them swimming in Lake Erie this year. Recent hatches have ranged from very good to outstanding, and by this month many will be of legal size or better. Which makes it time to go fishing.
If there’s a question, it’s how do you catch some of this fine eating species? And there are several answers to that. Probably the most common is to gather up some friends in a fairly large and stable boat owned by one of them, and head forth. Some might choose to fish the Central Basin, but there’s little question that the shallow and fertile Western Basin will hold the most fish, so that’s where most go.
Places to fish here are too many to mention them all, but some of the top spots are around the various reefs from Niagara to Crib and Toussaint. Knowing anglers will cruise a chosen area checking the fish finder until they find a goodly pod of walleyes, note the depth at which they’re holding, then start a drift. Most will cast weight forward spinners with a nightcrawler on the hook, often Erie Dearies, but sometimes other brands. Chartreuse is a favorite color, but walleye tastes seem to vary from day to day, and this day they might prefer red and white, or yellow, or some other color, so it’s wise to take several

International Memorial is “Highway to
Peace on the History”, TourismOhio’s 10 themed road trips launched for the 2019 season on its new website
RoadTrips.Ohio.org.
“We are excited to be
a stop on Ohio Tourism’s Highway to History Road Trip,” said Superintendent Barbara Rowles, “Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial offers our visitors interesting programs, special events, and a beautiful 25-acre park to enjoy.” Among the major events Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial offers is the third annual Put-in- Bay Music Festival, a free concert on Saturday, June 8, that features six bands and is a family friendly event, she said.
Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial Park Rangers give daily programs on history, the environment, historic small firearms, and programs for youth. One weekend a month Park Rangers provide historic small firearms and carronade (short barrel gun) firing demonstrations. The park also offers four evening sunset or night sky tours on the 317-foot tall Observation Deck during the summer, and ends each season honoring the men who fought and
one of
died in the Battle of Lake Erie during its Historic Weekend activities. A full list of park programs and activities can be found on its website at nps.gov/pevi.
Superintendent Rowles said the partnership with TourismOhio will bring more travelers to Ohio and introduce Perry’s Victory to new visitors as well as reacquaint those who have visited in the past. Matt MacLaren, director of OhioTourism, said Ohio is within a day’s drive of 60 percent of the U.S. population and research indicates visitation is coming from surrounding states. RoadTrips.Ohio.org was created as an easy way for families and friends to
find experiences to enjoy together.
RoadTrips.Ohio.org road trip themes include Thriving Cities (Urban), To the Moon and Back (Space/ Aviation), Are We There Yet? (Family), The Scenic Route (Outdoors), Lover’s Lane (Romance), Foodie
Fill-up (Cuisine), Highway to History (History), Rock, Ride and Explore (First- time Visitor), Culture Cruise (Culture) and Winning Drive (Sports).
