Meet Our Readers
John Lippus, Sandusky
By Sharon Sweda, Feature Writer
A visit to the United Way of Erie County website provides insight into the
life solutions that the non-profit has strived to deliver to Erie County since
1923. Needless to say, Executive Director John Lippus has not been a part of the organization since its arrival to Erie County, but he is nonetheless passionate about its role in the county today.
“My experience has made me aware of the fact that many really good people will
experience difficulties in their lives. With just a little help, most can move on to regain self-sufficiency,” tells Lippus. “We are often able to provide that assistance.”
United Way of Erie County, while part of United Way Worldwide, is a stand-alone entity. The resources raised in Erie County are kept within the county and allocated for the people they serve. According to Lippus, the greatest needs stem from mental health issues, employment challenges and reading skills.
“We exist without any state or federal funding,” Lippus explained. “The difficulty is magnified by the fact that there are more and more non-profits competing for the same dollars.”
The Sandusky High School graduate and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Perkins Township after having spent residency just outside Philadelphia, Pompano, Florida and Dearborn, Michigan before returning to his hometown. “Boating and Lake Erie were primary reasons for our return,” he muses. “Working with a non-profit means that many weekends are consumed with activities. We spend as much of our free time as possible on the lake.”
When queried about his interest in Leisure Living Magazine, Lippus echoed the sentiments of so many readers. “I like the local flare and the articles about people within our community. It is always a good read.”
