CMP Brings Marksmanship Opportunities To Camp Perry
By Ashley Brugnone, CMP Writer
For those looking for a new, stimulating hobby, try one of the country’s most advanced marksmanship facili- ties inside the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) world-class Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center. It is located right down the road from Port Clinton, on the grounds of historical Camp Perry. Everyone, of any age, is welcomed and encouraged to take a shot (or two or three) at the advancing world of air rifle and air pistol marks- manship from the safe and fun range.
The CMP is an organization dedicated to teaching firearms safety and marksmanship skills to youth and adults in Ohio and around the country through its numer- ous clinics, competitions and range events. Its national headquarters is located at Camp Perry, with events held both locally and regionally during the year.
The Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center con- tains an 80-point indoor range, for air gun use only, that is equipped with 10-meter firing points of electronic tar- gets. Air guns are simple to operate – with small lead pel- lets used as ammo and a pump or CO2 cylinder to expel the pellets downrange. There is absolutely no recoil in the light-weight guns, and the firing sound is so quiet that hearing protection is not required. Also, the climate-con- trolled building creates a comfortable setting for guests to enjoy during all seasons of the year.
The range is open for Open Public Nights on Tues- day and Thursday evenings from 5-8 pm. For those with- out personal air guns, some are available for loan at the range. Whether to improve on existing abilities or to learn something new, adults, children, families and friends are flocking to the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center as if it were a bowling alley or pool hall – a place for a night out on the town.
The Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center also houses authentic Olympic memorabilia and other nota- ble items from the outstanding career of one of the most decorated marksmen in U.S. history, Gary Anderson. All are welcome to visit the facility, even if just coming in for a look around.
The CMP also encourages those with disabilities to attend Open Nights. Spring stands and other equipment, as well as a team of knowledgeable staff, allow para-ath- letes, wheelchair users and ambulant athletes to join in on the fun.
Outside of the air range on Camp Perry’s base is an- other CMP marksmanship site, Petrarca Range, which is home to 10 rifle targets set up at 100 yards and 5 pistol targets at either 25 or 50 yards. Those interested in short- range zeroing can also accurately simulate 200, 300 and 600 yards on the targets, and benches are available for extra support while firing.
The air range allows a fun, simple and safe atmo- sphere for all ages and experience levels in air rifle and air pistol.
Come to the air range to challenge yourself or to challenge others in friendly competition.
Like the air range, the CMP hosts Open Public Nights on Petrarca Range throughout the year. Guests must provide his/her own equipment and ammo (no larg- er than .30-06 and no 300 Win Mag ammo or armor pierc- ing ammo). Ammo will also be available for purchase at the range. A small fee of $10/hour (or $25 for 3 hours) is all it costs to fire on Petrarca Range. CMP staff will be present at all times during the Open slots to ensure safe- ty procedures are followed and to answer any questions

In the summer, don’t forget about the CMP’s Na-
tional Pistol and Rifle Matches! Held annually at Camp Perry since 1907, the prestigious event has been deemed the “World Series of Shooting Sports,” and has made Port Clinton an historic destination for thousands of marksmen around the world for over 100 years.
